Epsom Downs
Written by Howard Brenton - 1977
My Role : Assistant Set and Costume Designer.
A character study.
The play is set on Darby Day in 1977 on the Queens Silver Jubilee at Epsom Racecourse.
We follow race-goers, Horse-owners, Bookies and Jockeys thought the day and explores human behaviours of different social and political classes, which was communicated through the costume design.
This is a very relevant piece thought every decade as as humans we are creatures of habit.

Model Making
I was able to create 1:25 scale models out of recycled materials for the model box.
The model was used through the whole creative and rehearsal process.

Technical Drawings
I was able to create ground plans of The Embassy Theatre, which I put the flown set on, including the painted backdrop cloth and maskings.
My ground plans were referenced during the whole technical process and later used for the hanging plot the lighting, sound and stage management teams used.
Technical drawings for a sign our stage management team would make for a scenic prop, 'Keep off the Course'.

Props making, sourcing and Set dressing
During the process I was given many tasks to assist our stage management team, one of which was helping to source some props.
My job also entailed of Set dressing which included hanging bunting and taking charge on fitting the carpet working alongside stage management to complete these tasks.
Prop making was a large part of my roll when we came closer to fit up and tech. I painted lots of small props and the toilet signs. I also made a chalk board, both of which allowed me to collaborate with the scenic art department as they taught me skills to make these including pouncing and sign writing.
