Three Sisters
Model Box
I made this model box of the Maria Studio at the Young Vic from ground plans we were provided.
I decided to have it in the round so as to make the audience feel as immersed as possible. The performers would enter and exit from the walkways and they would walk around the back of the audience chairs.
To incorporate the Berlin wall I put segments of the graffiti art on the walls of the studio.
The play is set in the living room and garden of the family home. To give the feel of the living room I put rugs down and used inside furniture including a chaise lounge and flower pots. To give the feel of the garden I had a swing that would be flown in and all of the living room set taken out except a chair and table.
Model Pieces
For the model box I was able to make lots of model pieces.
The chairs, I made them out of cardboard and then painted them to look like wood as through my research I struggled to find images of furniture within East Berlin so used references from before the wall went up.
The tables, I used the same research. I made the tops of the table out of cardboard and soldered the legs of the table.
The piano, I made out of cardboard and painted it to look like wood.
Also, I soldered the lighting rig as in my design I wanted it to be seen by the audience.
Costume Drawings
To draw these costume drawings I used Procreate.
I took a lot of reference from vintage patterns, I found a magazine, Sibylle magazine, that was illegal but circulated around East Berlin by people using it and then passing it on, with modern cloths patterns in so women could make their own cloths inspired by French fashion of the time. It was called the Vogue of east Berlin.
People would also make their clothing out of sheets used on strawberry fields and found materials so I made sure that the colour palettes mirrored this.
For the military uniforms I did excessive research into the regiments and uniforms used, some of which were recycled uniforms from other countries armies. I made sure to be accurate to show the different ranks.
